- Open the Adobe Encore program and open the project you are working on, by going to “File,” “Open,” “Go to Window,” and “Menu” to open the Menu editor window.

Select the text tool (T) in the toolbox and click directly on the Menu Editor window to make it active.

For the purposes of these instructions, type the name of your movie, “My Movie.” Go to “Edit,” and then “Select All.”

Go to “Window,” and then “Character” to make the text character palette active. In the window that opens, you can here choose your font type and size. You can also change the color of the text, by clicking on the color box in the upper-left hand corner. Save your work.
- Open the Adobe Encore program and open a new project, by going to File, New Project. Click OK to accept NTSC, the standard television format for DVDs played in the US.

Go to File, and choose Import as Asset. Navigate to where your footage is saved in its final format, and select it. Click Open.

Repeat for each video file.

Encore organizes all video “assets” in a project window where you can view information on all of the files you have imported to use in the DVD project.

Go to File, and Save As to save the Encore project.

Click on the selection tool in the toolbox. It looks like an arrow. Use the selection tool to select one of the buttons you have created in the menu.

Each button relates to a video clip and each video clip need to be in its own timeline, with its own name

For your first button, open the Properties menu related to that button by selecting the button within the Menu Editor Window. For example, if your button is “Play Movie” you want it to link to the timeline that contains the video footage for that movie. In the button properties menu you will see “Link” and next to it a drop-down menu. The drop-down menu contains everything that is in your project assets window. Select the name of the timeline that contains the movie from the list.

Open your Timeline properties window by clicking on the timeline. There you will see “End” with a drop-down menu. Select the name of your Menu from that list, so at the end of your movie the Menu will come back up on your viewer’s TV screen.

Repeat the above for each button. Save your work.

Go to “Object,” then “Create Subpicture.” Then go to “View,” and “Show Selected Subpicture” so you can see how the button will look when it is clicked on. Repeat the above step for each button.

Go to “Edit,” then “Color Sets,” then “Menu.” In the box that opens, click the “New Color Set” button. Give your color set a name, so you can easily find it.

In “Highlight Group Section” one, click on the color chooser and choose the color you want to appear when your button is selected.

From the “Opacity Menu,” choose a number between 50 and 80 percent.

Go back out to the “Properties” tab for the “Menu,” and from “Color Set,” choose the name of the new color set you just created.

Save your work.
If you have finished your movie and are ready to create a DVD, a great program to use is Adobe Encore. Once you have all your video in timelines, you may choose to create “Chapter Points” in the footage, so your viewers can easily navigate the DVD.

From within your Project Window, click on the “Timeline” containing the footage you want to add Chapter Points to. Open the video monitor, by going to “Window,” and then “Monitor.” Click play or move the “Time Indicator” in your “Timeline,” stopping when you get to the point where your chapter break will be.

Go to “Timeline,” and then “Add Chapter Point.”

Repeat the above steps for as many “Chapter Points” as you wish to enter. Save your work.
